ABOUT

The ASCE Mobile Branch was established as a local branch of Alabama Section the American Society of Civil Engineers in 1973. Our members are civil engineering professionals, students, and affiliates who live and work in Mobile and Baldwin Counties in Coastal Alabama. The Mobile Branch is one of six local branches in Alabama, all of which belong to the Alabama Section.  The Alabama Section, officially started in 1931, is part of the National Society's Geographic Region 5 along with the Louisiana, Mississippi, Georgia, and Florida Sections.

The ASCE has multiple levels of membership, depending on your education, location, and experience level, and depending on how connected and active you want to be both in the ASCE and in your community.  The National ASCE is where membership begins.

MEMBER FASTER FORWARD

MISSION

Our mission is to provide value to our members and partners in the Mobile area, promote the profession of civil engineering, and serve the public good by bringing attention to the services provided by civil engineers, reaching out to area students to encourage interest in civil engineering, and educating members and the public about the infrastructure and sustainable practices.

We do this by providing regular monthly meetings for networking and professional development opportunities and occasional outreach activities in and around Mobile. The Branch typically meets once a month at locations that vary throughout the region. To find out more information about how you can get involved and what is happening within the Branch, check out our Events page to find details of our upcoming meetings. Our meetings are always open to all engineers at any level and their affiliates. We hope to see you there!

What accomplishment/project are you most proud of?
I am most proud of the projects that I have participated in that involve new innovations or a solution to past problems. Continuously learning is one of my accomplishments that always makes me proud to be in the engineering field.

What is your favorite book, TV show or movie?
I couldn’t pick just one of any of these. So many genres, so little time. I’m still looking for my favorites.

Anything else you would like to add?
I enjoy my profession and interacting with my fellow engineers. I have found that ASCE is a great place to meet like-minded individuals with passion for their engineering careers.

Past President

Daniel McGough, PE

Occupation
Senior Geotechnical Engineer at Southern Earth Sciences, Inc.

What accomplishment/project are you most proud of?
I did some investigation and remedial design work on a large dam project near Asheville, NC relatively early in my career that was very satisfying. I used to drive by it frequently could see the product of my efforts from the highway. In the Carolinas, I enjoyed frequently working on landslide projects- some large and threatening to people, some small and impacting just one property owner. I always got a lot of satisfaction from figuring out the causes of the slide and coming up with solutions.

I get a lot of satisfaction from working on local building and infrastructure projects where I can see the completed project on a regular basis and in knowing that I had a part in it.

What is your favorite book, TV show or movie?
I like a good superhero movie. I like watching good historical documentaries.

Branch Director and SEI Mobile Chapter Contact

Dr. John Cleary, Ph.D., PE, F.SEI

Occupation
Chair and Associate Professor, Department of Civil, Coastal, and Environmental Engineering, University of South Alabama

What accomplishment/project are you most proud of?
From a professional standpoint, the accomplishment that I am most proud of is working with students to help them learn and accomplish their goals both at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The project(s) that I am most proud of is assessing damage after Hurricanes Harvey, Michael, Laura, and Sally. Working with a team of researchers, we assessed structural wind damage shortly after landfall. This is an opportunity that few engineers are able to take advantage of and I was able to use the knowledge gained there to improve my understanding of wind and structural engineering. I was also able to bring this information back into the classroom, which was the most important part!

What is your favorite book, TV show or movie?
Most of my reading is work related (textbooks, Structures Magazine, Journals, etc). My favorite tv show is definitely football, that is about all I watch consistently.

Anything else you would like to add?
Actively participating in ASCE is a very rewarding experience. Sometimes it can seem like a lot of work and if you have not done it before it may look a little intimidating, however, it is not nearly as much work as it seems and everyone is really helpful. I highly recommend getting involved, all it takes is talking to an officer to see what you can do to help!

Governing Documents

The Mobile Branch is organized and operated according to Branch Bylaws that are established and approved by the local membership and the Society.  The original Constitution and Bylaws of the Branch were adopted April 30, 1973.  The Branch Bylaws were updated in October 2017 and approved by the Alabama Section in March 2018.  A Branch Constitution is no longer required as the Section Constitution now governs.
